Theatricality and drama are celebrated in this purpose-built gymnastics arena.
Baku Gymnastics Arena is Pattern’s second completed built project. Pattern was established as Lead Designer on this landmark city building on a prominent site after winning the project in an invite-only competition. As the building was established to hosting gymnastics and other sporting, cultural and entertainment events, our idea was to maximise utilisation without compromising the core use. An innovative concourse and bowl arrangement allows for a variety of formal and informal events, ranging from concerts, competition karting, Futsal and exhibitions. Spectators can be seated, standing or in informal areas around the main bowl.
Externally, the arena is symbolic of Azerbaijan’s rhythmic gymnastics excellence. A series of flowing ribbons shade the façade and frame views from the concourses. The opening took place in April 2014, with construction having commenced in Autumn 2011. We worked with Broadway Malyan, Mott MacDonald and Robert Bird.
