The Estadio’s prominent position with views out to the mountains, over the surrounding campus, and to the nearby Huaca have inspired the architectural response of “a journey through the Lima landscape".

The site of San Marcos encompasses an area of 12.4 hectares. Part of the existing sports park was converted to meet the sports infrastructure requirements to host the PanAmerican and ParaPanAmerican Games in 2019. Pattern designed the renovation of the San Marcos Athletic Stadium as part of Lima2019’s cluster of three buildings at Callao and San Marcos. The fast-track renovations took 12 months to design and construct.

Pattern’s renovation included upgrades to comply with IAAF (International Athletics Federation) standards. This included adding a roof and 22,000 flip-up seats, as well as redesigning the external landscaping and renovating the entire building. Upgrades were made to comply with current accessibility and building regulations in Peru. New toilets, changing rooms and hospitality and broadcasting facilities have modernised the venue
