Rugby Stadium
Bath, UKA civic building addressing the river in the World Heritage city of Bath.
This project was won in an invited competition in collaboration with Fielden Clegg Bradley, a Bath-based practice. Set in the heart of the sublime city of Bath, a Unesco World Heritage Site, the stadium is highly visible within the community it serves.
The scheme reinterprets the historic promenading culture of the spa town and regenerates the central river frontage to create new bars and restaurants. The stadium is on the existing club site and is configured in three main stands. The demountable east stand opens up the pitch to allow Twenty20 cricket, concerts and cultural events.
To keep the building low and sympathetic to the surrounding environment, the majority of spectators are located in a steep lower-tier. This consideration fulfils the client’s desire for an intense gladiatorial atmosphere.
